Discovery of one of the brightest distant galaxies ever seen Astronomers have detected one of the brightest galaxies ever seen in the distant universe. The galaxy known as BG1429+1202 was discovered 11.4 billion light years away – which is some four fifths of the way back to the beginning of the universe -- thanks to a process known as gravitational lensing. Trying to understand quantum gravity Cosmologists trying to understand how to unite the two pillars of modern science -- quantum physics and gravity -- have found a new way to make robust predictions about the effect of quantum fluctuations on primordial density waves which are ripples in the fabric of space and time. Scientists have found quantum imprints left on cosmological structures in the very early universe and shed light on what we may expect from a full quantum theory of gravity. Breakthrough project Astronomers are about to begin a new project to search for planets in our nearest neighbouring star system Alpha Centauri. The new search is part of the Breakthough foundation Initiative funded by Russian physicist Yuri Millner and British scientist Steven Hawking. The foundation is already funding two other major projects -- Breakthrough listen t which is searching for radio signals from extra-terrestrial intelligence and Breakthrough Starshot which is developing a swarm of small spacecraft -- each fitted with a giant sail propelled by lasers -- which will travel to the Alpha Centauri star system. Japan satellite crash and burn The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency – JAXA -- has lost a scientific satellite when its launch vehicle crashed and burned during accent. Mission managers say all communications was lost after the first stage completed its 31 second engine burn. Galaxy murder mystery solved Young galaxies can be violently stripped of their youth and turned old by superheated intergalactic plasma contained in large halos of dark matter. Monstrous black holes discovered hiding in our cosmic backyard
Like monsters hiding under the bed -- two enormous black holes have been discovered lurking behind clouds of gas and dust in galaxies close to our own galaxy the Milky Way. The giant gravity wells – known as supermassive black holes -- were detected by NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array – NuSTAR – spacecraft by the high energy X-ray emissions they were generating as they feed on anything that ventured too close More evidence for cycles of wet and dry periods found on Mars NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover has discovered what look like mud cracks on the surface of the red planet. If confirmed, these would be the first mud cracks -- technically called desiccation cracks – found by the Curiosity mission. Cosmic Dust found on roof tops Scientists have found traces of cosmic dust on the roof tops in across Europe. The space dust particles – which are technically micrometeorites – were found of tops of buildings in Paris, Berlin and Oslo. SpaceX returns to flight status SpaceX has returned to flight status with the successful launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California carrying ten new Iridium telecommunications satellites into orbit. The flight was a double success for the Hawthorne California based company with the launch vehicle’s first stage successfully landing on a floating platform in the North Pacific Ocean. The findings are based on a study of 11 distant Milky Way stars -- all located about 300,000 light-years away and well beyond the Milky Way's spiral disk. The Moon is much older than we thought The Earth’s Moon is at least 4.51 billion years old – that’s between 40 million and 140 million years older than previously thought. The findings are based on a new analysis of zircons found in lunar minerals brought back to Earth by the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. New telescope chip offers clear view of alien planets Scientists have developed a new optical telescope chip for a telescope which will enable astronomers to have a clear view of alien planets capable of supporting life. Seeing a planet outside the solar system which is close to its host star – that is in the star’s habitable zone – is extremely difficult with today’s standard astronomical instruments due to the brightness of the star. Hubble provides interstellar road map for Voyagers' galactic trek NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is being used to study the flight paths of the space agency’s twin Voyager spacecraft allowing astronomers to see what the probes are flying through. The two Voyager spacecraft are hurtling through unexplored territory on their journey beyond our solar system. Along the way, they’re measuring the mysterious environment between stars known as the interstellar medium. The observations contain the highest concentration of supermassive black holes ever seen, equivalent to about 5,000 objects. Star heading for as flyby of our solar system. The European Space Agency’s Gaia mission has identified a star which will come close enough to our solar system to affect the orbits of comets in the Oort Cloud – the hypothetical sphere of comets and icy debris caught in the Sun’s gravity well surrounding the solar system. The star -- known as Gliese 710 -- will pass within 26 billion kilometres or 72 light days of the Earth in 1.35 million years’ time. Our galaxy’s black hole flinging Jupiter sized projectiles in to space Astronomers have concluded that the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy the Milky Way is ejecting giant planet sized balls of plasma every few thousand years. The plasma balls are the superheated remains of stars that have wandered too close to the monstrous black hole and were ripped apart in gravitational tidal disruption events. China undertakes first launch for 2017 China has carried out its first launch for the year sending a Long March 3b rocket into space with a new experimental military telecommunications satellite. Mysterious Fast Radio Bursts linked to a distant dwarf galaxy and maybe a Magnetar
Astronomers are a step closer to finally determining what mysterious powerful energy blasts known as Fast Radio Bursts are. They’ve narrowed down a likely source to a distant ancient dwarf galaxy some three billion light years away – and possibly to a highly magnetic type of neutron star known as a magnetar. Two new missions to explore early solar system NASA has selected two missions designed to open new windows on one of the earliest eras in the history of our solar system -- a time less than 10 million years after the birth of the Sun. The missions, known as Lucy and Psyche will fly in 2021 and 2013 respectively. Two more Near Earth objects discovered NASA's NEOWISE mission has discovered another two previously unknown Near Earth Objects or NEOs heading for our celestial neighbourhood, including one that further blurs the line between asteroids and comets. One is an object called 2016 WF9 in an orbit that takes it on a scenic tour of our solar system, while the other is a new comet named C/2016 U1 NEOWISE which has a good chance of becoming visible through binoculars. Dark Matter pioneer astronomer Vera Rubin dies at 88 One of the great pioneers of Dark Matter – astronomer Vera Rubin has passed away aged 88. Rubin’s pioneering research measuring galactic rotation curves proved there was something fundamentally wrong with sciences understanding of the physics of the universe. Either there was a serious flaw in the laws of gravity or there was a great deal of unseen mass out there -- needed to explain observations of the apparent movement of galaxies in clusters. We now know that missing mass is Dark Matter. Military satellite launched on Delta IV rocket One of the world’s most advanced military telecommunications satellites has been successfully launched into orbit. The eighth US Air Force Wideband Global Satcom system‘s satellite WGS-8 blasted into black skies aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 rocket from Space Launch Complex 37B at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida. The Universe has lost up to five percent of its dark matter The Universe may have lost between two and five percent of its dark matter since the big bang. The findings could explain one of the biggest mysteries in physics – namely why the Universe appears to behave slightly differently now compared to shortly after its formation13.8 billion years ago. The new study could also fresh shed light on how the cosmos is likely to evolve into the future. JUNO completes third close flyby of Jupiter NASA’s Juno spacecraft has successfully completed its third close flyby of the planet Jupiter. At the time of closest approach -- called perijove -- Juno skimmed just 4,150 kilometres above the gas giant's roiling cloud tops -- traveling at 57.8 kilometres per second -- relative to the planet. China places satellites into wrong orbit Beijing won’t admit it but one of its Long March rockets has placed two new Earth observation satellites in the wrong orbit. The mission was carrying two of Beijing’s newest and most advanced SuperView 1 high-resolution Earth Observation satellites as well as a small cubesat.
